Who we are
Environment New Hampshire is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about New Hampshire — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s kayaking across Lake Winnipesaukee at sunset, hiking up Mount Washington, or enjoying any one of our 67 state parks, New Hampshire’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action.
That’s the idea behind Environment New Hampshire. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

OUR STAFF
What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting New Hampshire’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door-to-door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about New Hampshire’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
- Protecting New Hampshire's Lakes. It's not easy keeping Winnipesaukee, Sunapee and all of our lakes clean enough for fishing and swimming—especially after shortsighted legal decisions left more than 9,000 miles of the streams that feed them vulnerable to pollution. Together with the 1,200 comments we collected, your support helped convince the Environmental Protection Agency to move closer to restoring Clean Water Act protections for all of our waters.
- Moving Towards Clean Energy. Thanks to you, our state's top clean energy program is helping New Hampshire families and businesses improve their energy efficiency—despite the out-of-state energy interests who nearly convinced the Legislature to kill the program in 2011. Thanks to the response of our members, our staff and a coalition of businesses and veteran's groups, we were able to stop the rollback.
- Reducing Mercury Pollution. The dangerous mercury emissions that drifted from Midwestern coal plants into New Hampshire's air and water will be reduced by 90% under new EPA standards we supported, along with Sens. Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen. That's great news for New Hampshire's families, given mercury's toxic effect on our kids'—development and great news for those of us who fish and swim in Lake Winnipesaukee, the Merrimack River and other waters threatened by mercury pollution.
